As travel bloggers, every once in a while a dream partnership comes along that makes us do an impromptu happy dance in our living room. A partnership that aligns SO well with our values and passions, that we’re reminded why we got into the travel blogging game to begin with. Enter: LifeStraw.
LifeStraw is a company with a mission to bring safe water to the world. They have a line of water bottles, filters and purifiers that take all the nasty stuff out of your water, whether it be personal water bottles or larger filters for the whole community.
LifeStraw products are perfect for the adventure travelers on the go, exploring new areas and exposing themselves to potential bacteria and infections due to contaminated water. Their products make it easier for travelers like us to visit destinations with unsafe drinking water. We can also cut down on our plastic use by drinking filtered tap water instead of buying water bottles.
But LifeStraw does more than just sell consumer products. Their first and foremost mission is to bring their technology to developing communities that don’t have access to safe drinking water. LifeStraw first started following the success of their parent company, Vestergaard, who produced a filter to remove Guinea worm larvae from water. Today, over 37 million of those filters have contributed to the near eradication of the disease.
LifeStraw works directly with developing communities that don’t have access to safe drinking water, by providing them with large scale LifeStraw Community purifiers. A portion of their sales goes to financing the installment of these purifiers in schools in the developing world. For every LifeStraw product sold, a school child in need receives safe drinking water for an entire year!
How We’re Involved
For years LifeStraw has helped school children in Africa get access to safe water. Through their Give Back program, they’ve provided over a million students with safe drinking water, reaching over 1,600 schools and delivering over 10,000 community filters. And now, they’re spreading their important work to other parts of the world!
Thanks to LifeStraw, and the awesome people who buy their products, they’re now able to take water purifiers to rural schools in Mexico – and we’re going with them! We’ll be able to show our audience just how much of an impact a simple purchase can make.
We’re heading to Chiapas, the southernmost state in Mexico, a region that has some of the country’s least safe drinking water. We’ll be joining the LifeStraw team in helping to set up the LifeStraw Community purifiers in schools around the San Cristobal de las Casas area. LifeStraw will be conducting training for staff and kids, as well as collecting data to make sure everything is running efficiently. During the trip we’ll also be joined by two lucky contest winners, who entered a competition to attend this trip and help with the project.
Having spent a few months in Chiapas back in 2013, we are really excited to get back to this incredible community and spend time in the schools. By addressing the problem of safe drinking water, we know these children will be able to focus more on what matters most – their friends, family, schoolwork and, of course, being kids! We can’t wait to play games, laugh, and learn about what makes them happy.
Adventure with LifeStraw in Mexico
The second part of our trip will be focused on the adventure side of LifeStraw, exploring the incredible sights around Chiapas and putting their products to the test! We’ll be visiting ruins at the ancient Mayan city of Palenque. We’ll be hopping in the water at Agua Azul, a series of bright turquoise cascading pools of water, and amazing at Miso Ha, a powerful 35 meter tall waterfall.
We’ll be cruising down the Usumacinta River that divides Mexico and Guatemala and river rafting Lacanja River. Adventure travel is a huge part of Don’t Forget To Move and the LifeStraw brand, so we can’t wait to get out into nature and see what their filters can do!
Appreciating Our Privilege
As we get ready for our trip, we can’t help but feel extremely privileged with our easy access to safe water. Let’s face it, those of us from the US, Australia and other Western countries will never know what it’s like to not have safe drinking water at our disposal. We are so honored and humbled to be a part of this project and help in any way we can to alleviate this issue. Safe drinking water is such a basic human need, we’re grateful that companies like LifeStraw are addressing this serious problem.
